Ever since the dawn of humanity, gardens have played a critical part in the sustenance and well-being of human life. Not just a resource for growing food, gardens nurture our well-being in ways that go far beyond just physical needs, as the poet Dorothy Frances Gurney  put it  "one is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth".  Many major faith traditions place significant events in a garden, and spending time in gardens or green-spaces is becoming increasingly valued by health practitioners as at least complimentary to using pharmaceutical products

Holland House is offering an on-line day exploring the spirituality of the garden with two fantastic garden designers, both of who are steeped in both the scientific and spiritual aspects of the garden.

Kristina Fitzsimmons and Patrick Swan are award winning gardeners, and will be leading this special day, facilitated by Revd Ian Spencer - Warden of Holland House.    If gardens, green spaces, or even your window-sill or balcony with a potted plant or two, means something special to you - you'll love this retreat-at-home.

This meditative quiet day will focus on two paintings, William Holman Hunt's 'Light of the World and Salvador Dali's 'Christ of St John of the Cross'. We will meditate on the light of Christ in the world today, using the change of seasons to reflect on how light in the darkness gives us direction, hope and renewal as we head into Autumn and the season of Advent.

International Aramaic scholar Neil Douglas-Klotz returns to Holland House in 2020 to guide us through the Beatitudes following the path to "ripeness".

Breathing with Unity, Living with Blessing

Chant, Movement and Contemplative Prayer with the Aramaic Jesus

This year at Holland House, we will return to the heart-awareness of the present moment with a journey through the Beatitudes of Jesus in Aramaic. Through chant, simple circle movement and contemplative prayer, we will re-enter the state that Jesus calls tub, “blessedly ripe—at the right time and place” We will follow the journey of one of the most profound aspects of Jesus’ teaching, the Beatitudes in Matthew. This is a healing journey that takes us to deepest part of ourselves and then resurrects us in power and joy. Whether or not you have joined in these Aramaic retreats previously, this is a wonderful doorway into Jesus’ native spirituality and way of meditation.

Holland House is delighted to announce a weekend in person with Diarmuid O'Murchu this Advent

We Await the Coming – Advent as Subversive Memory

Advent recalls the birth of Jesus in our world, while also reminding us God’s future coming at the end time. In this weekend conference, Diarmuid O’Murchu will introduce new insights on the meaning of Advent, following the guideline of Scripture scholar, John. D. Crossan: While we are waiting for God’s intervention, God is actually waiting on our collaboration. The challenges to Christian faith are quite substantial and through input, reflection, and dialogue, will be explored over the weekend".

With increasing numbers logging-on to Diarmuids on-line events for us, the weekend is sure to be a sell-out.
Mark a space in your diary for what will be a great inspirational Advent retreat.

Many of us make new year's resolutions that start in good faith but soon fizzle out,  everyday-life just squeezes our good intentions off the map.

Good physical and mental health is something that shouldn't be squeezed out of our lives, indeed they should be a priority , but making a resolution to be fit &well in body and mind has the same squeeze problem.

This weekend is designed to get us off to the best of starts for the new year. Ian Spencer will lead us in a weekend of yoga practice that not only supports our bodies, but helps strengthen our breath and clear our noisy minds. No previous experience of yoga is necessary, and Ian will be adding regular dates across 2022 to support your intention - so no more "fizzle-out" problems!

" ‘Soul’ is a confusing term – commonly bandied about in religious circles but seldom defined or much understood. It’s also used in psychology, and popular culture where for example music, art, conversations, food, friendships, habits and rituals may be considered soulful. Perhaps the great dilemma of our times is a ‘loss of soul’ – a dislocation from our deepest selves, from compassion, from nature – ultimately, from the divine. Yet when soul is neglected, it doesn’t simply go away; it appears in obsessions, addictions, aggression, and loss of meaning."

Drawing on music, art, poetry and biblical imagination, this weekend retreat will consider, not only the meaning of soul in theological and cultural terms, but importantly, explore tangible ways to foster soulfulness in ordinary everyday life, and in our world.

Dave Tomlinson is an Anglican priest, and chaplain to the St Ethelburga’s Centre for Peace and Reconciliation. He holds a Master’s degree in Biblical Hermeneutics, and is the author of many books including How to be a Bad Christian - and a better human being and Black Sheep and Prodigals – an antidote to black and white religion. Dave also regularly contributes to BBC Radio 2’s ‘Pause for Thought’ and currently invites all to his Holy Shed every Sunday evening.

The retreat runs from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. All inclusive cost - £305
