Revd Ian Spencer is leading a day on "Contemplating Christmas", that is, how might we experience the incarnation of God as man ? What does the nativity of Christ tell us about how we might experience "God with us - Emmanuel" for ourselves ?

The emphasis will be on experiencing this, rather than having a theological discussion, and is part of the "practice experiencing prayer" (pep) days Ian has been leading during the year.

The day includes all refreshments and a two-course lunch. As these days are increasingly popular it's best to book early. Cost £30  To book your place click on this link  Contemplating Christmas

During this weekend we will discover what the message of Advent and Christmas can mean in the context of our lives as gay, lesbian, bisexual men & women or transgendered people. Our colours of the Rainbow may lead us to this Christ event.

We remember that Christ was born in the midst of outcasts of his time. As queer men and women of faith we also experience that the religions of our time do not necessarily want us in their midst, yet we find our place, trust our journey and are blessed.  Like the Magi in the Nativity story we have gifts to bring,  and we are invited to consider what these gifts mean as LGBT people both for ourselves and the world.

Our time together will consist of talks and discussions, liturgy and meditation, prayer and visualisation with time for quiet reflection and rest. Wherever you are on your faith journey or whatever spiritual background you are from, you are welcome to participate.

Residential retreat: £180 includes accommodation, meals and refreshments.

Hosted by CARM (The Creative Arts Retreat Movement) and Holland House this day retreat is an exploration of darkness and light in the spiritual life and how we reflect this in art.

This day comes just after Easter during which many of us will have travelled along the darkness of the way of the cross to the light of the resurrection. Light and dark are great themes in the Christian faith and in the Christian life. All of us experience times of darkness and light, sorrows and joys, ups and downs.  Life teaches us that they are an inevitable part of our humanity.

What does it mean to discover God in both the light and the dark?  Can our darkness “dazzle” with the light of God even in difficult times and can we experience the light of God when our prayer seems dry and dark?

This day will explore these two elements using times of silence, times of input and time to pray.  We will use paint and pastel as a way of expressing our prayer in a different way.  You do not need to bring anything (though if you have some art materials it would be helpful to bring them) and you do NOT have to be good at art – just to have a desire to let go, pray and see what comes.

This day is for everyone who would like to explore how spirituality and creativity can go together.

The cost is £32 per person which includes refreshments and lunch.

    'Some blessed Hope’

‘We stand on the shoulders of giants’; in our time together at this weekend retreat we shall attempt to stand on the shoulders of Thomas Hardy; not the sometimes gloomy talented story teller but the inspired poet. From our vantage point we shall try to see with his eyes the things he saw and find ‘some blessed hope’ to cheer us on our way.

‘We follow in the footsteps of them that have gone before’; to this end, as we discern the direction of Thomas Hardy we shall also recall the leadership of Diana Walls over the years and give thanks for all she has given us and trust that the ‘blessed hope’ which she had is now a reality for her.

Do take the time to read some Hardy poetry; and if you wish, do contact either of us in advance of the retreat. You can do this through Holland House. We look forward to joining with fellow pilgrims on 1st to 3rd June.

The cost is £190 per person which includes accommodation and meals.

Holland House is delighted to welcome the world renowned Sufi and Aramaic scholar Dr Neil Douglas-Klotz for a very special weekend retreat.

"Chanting and meditating with the words of Jesus in his native Aramaic language...... (either aloud or silently) offers one a direct connection through vibration, sound and breath to the spirituality of a person. Predating the Western creeds and original sin-based theology, in the same way that Eastern mantra can, it bypasses the overly-busy, conceptual mind and allows one to enter deeply into feeling and body. This meditative art combines simple chanting with contemplative, body-based awareness, either sitting in silence or with gentle circle dance movement. It can also be used as a retreat process of spiritual renewal. This retreat will offer an experience with its originator, who will also offer suggestions for starting and leading one’s own group".   Early booking essential.

Cost is £255 per person which includes all meals and accommodation.

An ideal opportunity to begin Lent with a spiritual practice that unites body, mind and spirit.  Christians have always understood Lent to be a time of preparation for Easter, a time of focusing our attention on the ultimate moment of faith. However, we all struggle in our efforts to be focused over long periods of time, and so this retreat will introduce the yoga practice of "pratyahara" - a very practical method we can use to help us get focused and stay focused (and healthy !)

This retreat will engage us in asana (postures), pranayama (breath-work), chanting, meditation and discussion. Revd Ian Spencer will use passages from the yoga sutra along with Biblical passages as a way of illuminating our path during the retreat.

In addition, Ian will provide all participants with a short yoga practice to use at home during Lent.

    Meals will be vegetarian

The retreat is suitable for experienced and non-experienced in yoga.   Click on this link to book your place and enjoy looking forward to a great start to Lent:   Yoga for Lent

The key word here is experience (not “know” – in terms of empirical or rational knowledge). So, how do we experience who “I am” ?

Led by Rev'd Ian Spencer these retreats are based on themes from Rohr's book of daily meditations "A Spring within us".

Theme for today is   “discharging your loyal soldier”. There are times when soldiers are needed, but when the war ends what next for the loyal soldier ?  We all have an internal loyal soldier for whom without a war life appears frustrating and meaningless. Rohr’s “gateway to silence” for this meditation is “the war has ended – go in peace”.  What might this mean for us, and for the wider community ?  How is this connected to healing and peace ?

    THE GREENING OF GOD

John Bell's  credentials as a Christian with a deep connection to the Celtic tradition, are second to none.

Many of his songs, poems and writings touch on God's love of what God has made, and his many years of work with the Iona community and  Wildgoose publishing speak eloquently of his love for the natural world. Holland House too has a deep desire to honour and appreciate the natural world, hence our strapline "in harmony with Creation", and our 2011 Footprints Award for sustainability. This is more than a weekend retreat,  it's a collaboration on the sacredness of the earth that anyone who loves the planet will not want to miss.

Johns synopsis reads:  A review of why ecology and faith were together in the  beginning, were torn asunder, and now desperately need to find each other again IF God really loves the world

Following on from the hugely successful retreat in September 2018, Holland House has been able to secure Neil Douglas-Klotz for another very special weekend. In Neil's words the weekend involves " Heartsong, Silence and Movement  with the Aramaic Words of Jesus"
"The Aramaic words of Jesus provide a direct pathway to his experience of contemplative prayer, healing and the sacred. During this workshop, we will learn and chant together selected short phrases from his prayer, the Beatitudes, and other sayings in the Gospels. We will  then use them in contemplative prayer and silence as well as experience simple body prayers in the form of Dances of Universal Peace linked to his Middle Eastern way of experiencing Alaha--Sacred Unity--as a force that moves through every aspect of our everyday lives".

The old adage "book early to avoid disappointment" most certainly applies !

One of a series of day retreats on offer throughout 2019,  working with the teachings of Fr Richard Rohr, Franciscan Friar, author and leader of the Centre for Action and Contemplation.

Led by Rev'd Ian Spencer these retreats are based on themes from Rohr's book of daily meditations "A Spring within us".

Theme for today is   “Image of God – let God be who God is”   As Christmas begins to loom on the horizon, what does it mean to realise the “image of God” in our lives ?

Rohr writes “for most of human history, God was not a likable, much less a lovable character – which is why so much Biblical narrative begins “do not be afraid”.  What have humans done to the image of God ? How did it become such an angst-filled image for so many ?  And what can we do to restore its truth in both our own lives, and in the lives of others ?

Each day will include a short act of worship, teaching, discussion and free time to practice/consider what we’ve learned.

The day will conclude at 4.00pm with afternoon tea.

Cost £38 and includes morning coffee, 2 course lunch and afternoon tea.

The Centre for Action and Contemplation in the U.S.A.  has offered Holland House some exclusive video and other resource to help make this retreat a fabulous experience, and they're aware and supportive of this particular event - the only one of its kind in the UK this year.

The retreat will focus on Fr Richards latest (and some say greatest) of his works, which looks deeply into what we mean and understand by the "Christ" .

"The union of matter and spirit, of human and divine, is revealed in the cosmos as Christ and in human history as Jesus. Richard Rohr’s long-awaited book paints a portrait of God’s infinite love, offering a healing vision of wholeness at the heart of the universe"

We're delighted to be working in collaboration with Rohr's Retreat Centre (CAC) for the first time - come and be a part of something very special. Follow this link to book your place, before someone else does !      The-rohr-retreat-the-universal-christ/

‘The Chamberlains and the Birmingham Civic Gospel’ with Andrew Reekes

Late 19th century Birmingham was renowned both as the ‘best governed city in the world’ and as ‘the most artistic town in England’. It was also the progenitor of the ‘civic gospel’, which sought to elevate and improve its citizens. Two unrelated Chamberlains, Joseph and John Henry, were above all others responsible for practically implementing the ideals of this gospel. This lecture tells their inspiring story.

Led by Rev'd Ian Spencer these retreats are based on themes from Rohr's book of daily meditations "A Spring within us".

Theme for today is "Transformative dying" .  Rohr writes "Historically.....God was not considered friendly and always needing placating. God was distant and scary .... not someone you fell in love with or with whom you could imagine sharing intimacy. Jesus presented a much different image of God, but it seems very hard for people to let go of their punitive ideas of God.......  Just four days after Easter Sunday we shall be exploring the theme of what kind of dying is truly transformative?

Each day will include teaching, discussion and free time to practice/consider what we’ve learned.

The day will conclude with a contemplative Holy Communion service (optional but all invited) followed by afternoon tea at 4pm.

Come and spend a peaceful day at Holland House with Marianne. We will focus on experiences of light - in religion, in art and in our own lives. There will be time to listen, to share and to enjoy silence as well as a delicious lunch.

An opportunity to consider experiences of light in the major religious traditions, in works of art and in the experiences of ordinary people.Whether in abstract visions or in the form of angelic beings, light has a transformative effect. There will be time for silent reflection and also the opportunity to share our own experiences.

Marianne enjoys leading Quiet Days. She has written on religious and spiritual experience and on Dame Cicely Saunders and the hospice movement. She is currently studying for a PhD on the ‘fruits of spiritual experience’.

Many of us find prayer either difficult, less than satisfying, or have grown bored with it.However the Christian faith has a very rich heritage of prayer, for example prayer ropes, icons, meditation, rosary, nature-based, chanting, scripture-based, and more. This one day retreat explores a variety of prayer practices, and can be booked by individuals with a maximum of 4 people at any one time (more by prior appointment). It's not necessary to come as a group. This allows for personal discussion time with the tutor in the afternoon. If your prayer life isn’t as rich as you’d like it, "praying differently" offers other ways and practices. See and experience prayer afresh, and regain your enthusiasm and commitment to the sacred and transforming practice of prayer.

This retreat is for anyone interested in the work of Benedictine Monk Fr Bede Griffiths, or in how the experience of India can help illuminate the Christian tradition in new ways.

John Ryder writes "Many Christians have struggled to find the Christ we know in our hearts in the churches where we grew up.  We imbibed an image of God delivered in dualistic terms, excluding perspectives from other spiritual traditions.

Jane Lichnowski and John Ryder, along with Revd Ian Spencer, will offer a weekend to facilitate a deepening process of spiritual understanding through an exploration of the Katha Upanishad. This accessible Hindu scripture opens up questions of life and death, and invites us to journey into the ultimate nature of who we are. It provides an opportunity to hear and reflect on the Katha Upanishad, held within the Benedictine rhythm of the day as at Shantivanam (Bede's Indian monastery), with times of meditation and prayer, silence and sharing.  Also, opportunities for yoga, contemplative walking in the beautiful grounds, and an Indian-style Eucharist.

This is a unique opportunity rarely offered in the UK, do book early to secure your place. Email Revd Ian Spencer if you have any queries (ian.spencer@hollandhouse.org)

To book your place, visit the shop on this link  Bede Griffiths - Going Beyond

Jane Lichnowski and John Ryder are founder-members of the Bede Griffiths Sangha, a loosely - knit community of people formed 25 years ago after the death of Father Bede. (see www.bedegriffithssangha.org.uk)

International Aramaic scholar Neil Douglas-Klotz returns to Holland House in 2020 to guide us through the Beatitudes following the path to "ripeness".

Breathing with Unity, Living with Blessing

Chant, Movement and Contemplative Prayer with the Aramaic Jesus

This year at Holland House, we will return to the heart-awareness of the present moment with a journey through the Beatitudes of Jesus in Aramaic. Through chant, simple circle movement and contemplative prayer, we will re-enter the state that Jesus calls tub, “blessedly ripe—at the right time and place” We will follow the journey of one of the most profound aspects of Jesus’ teaching, the Beatitudes in Matthew. This is a healing journey that takes us to deepest part of ourselves and then resurrects us in power and joy. Whether or not you have joined in these Aramaic retreats previously, this is a wonderful doorway into Jesus’ native spirituality and way of meditation.

"Thomas Merton's Legacy to Interfaith Dialogue"

Thomas Merton OCSO (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and student of comparative religion

Merton was deeply committed to Interfaith dialogue, corresponding with Monks and Religious Leaders all over the world. Indeed it was on such a trip to engage with the Buddhists of Thailand that he tragically died on December 10th 1968.

Revd Dr Bonnie Thurston is a New Testament scholar who held the William F. Orr Professorship in the New Testament at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary from 1999 to 2002. She is the author or editor of twenty two theological books and six books of poetry, and wrote one of the first PhD dissertations on Merton.

Dr Thurston is a spiritual director and experienced retreat leader, and a founding member and past president of the International Thomas Merton Society.

Holland House is delighted to welcome Dr Thurston to lead a day on the principles of Interfaith Dialogue as espoused by Thomas Merton. This is an exciting one-off opportunity for anyone interested either in Merton or Interfaith work. An expert in Merton, Dr Thurston will lead us in a day of both learning and discussion regarding how we also might go about the critical work of Interfaith dialogue in the 21st century.

The day includes all refreshments and hot lunch and concludes at 4pm with afternoon tea.
